The Circulating Collection

The Tyndale library main collection is arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC).In the DDC System all areas of knowledge are organized within ten broad classifications using numbers 000 to 999. Each resource has a call number that can usually be found on the resource spine or front cover.In the call number, each Dewey Decimal number represents a specific area of knowledge. The Dewey number is usually followed by the author’s last name. In some cases, there are two names in the call number. In those cases, the name on the top row refers to the person the book is about, and the name on the bottom row refers to the author.

For Example:

 The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien has a call number that looks like this: 823.912 Tolkien

823 = English Fiction

.912 = English literature in the Modern Period before 1945.The .9 is a decimal number and thus is a larger number than 823.89. Therefore, 823.9 would be shelved after 823.89.

A work of commentary on The Hobbit might look like this: 823.912 Tolkien Jones
